Notes
Note 36266: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density: weigh the crated or palletized curb and divide by cubic feet, including blocking and bracing; put the PCF and NMFC 36265 on the BOL.
- Build robust packaging to resist fork-tine strikes: use rigid skids, internal bracing, banding, and corner guards to protect flanges and caps.
- Mark orientation and center of gravity; keep ducts, knockouts, and hardware inside the crate footprint to avoid oversize fees or reclass.
- Reference Item 170 and Note 36266; list mixed materials (e.g., galvanized steel with insulation) so inspectors can verify density quickly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density often earns a lower class for compact, heavy curbs, cutting LTL spend without compromising service.
- Strong crating/palletizing reduces damages and reclasses, minimizing claim exposure, inspection charges, and project delays.
- Clear NMFC references speed quoting and pickups, helping HVAC and roofing schedules stay on track for rooftop installs.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges for simpler, cheaper routing.
