How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “NMFC 36290 — steel basement entrance doors, framed with sides; not area/sidewalk doors” on the BOL to avoid misclassification.
- Package on a stout skid or in a wood crate with edge guards and blocking so the side panels and hinges cannot flex. Band in at least two directions and wrap to prevent scuffing.
- Load with hinges or hardware facing upward and keep the unit flat and centered on the pallet. Mark Do Not Stack and protect sharp corners with steel or plastic angles.
- Quote accessorials that jobsites often need—appointment, liftgate, or limited access—and include assembled dimensions and weight (example: 80 x 55 x 18 in, 280 lb) for accurate LTL rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate item naming (excluding area/sidewalk doors) reduces reclass and rebill risk, protecting margins and customer satisfaction.
- Clear NMFC identification speeds carrier rating and tendering, helping you secure consistent LTL pricing across lanes.
- Proper crating and bracing cut transit damage on heavy, awkward metalwork, lowering claims costs and delays.
- Right-sized accessorials and delivery planning keep projects on schedule and minimize detention or redelivery fees.
