How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare the item as steel door mullions with brass/bronze top, bottom, and strike plates, boxed under NMFC 36390 at Class 70 for consistent rating.
- Use double‑wall cartons sized to the mullion length; block the steel pipe so it cannot roll, add plastic end caps, and pad plate corners to prevent box punctures.
- Bag and label the top, bottom, and strike plates inside the carton, then secure them to an internal brace or to the pipe with protective wrap to stop rattling.
- If palletizing cartons, keep them flat, avoid bands directly over plate areas, and mark orientation if plate packs are stacked on one side for balance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density math, enabling fast, predictable LTL quotes and fewer reclasses.
- “In boxes” packaging specification aligns with carrier expectations, helping prevent inspection disputes and avoid surprise fees.
- Bundling the pipe mullion with brass/bronze plates in one protected carton cuts handling steps and lowers finish‑damage risk.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines dock turn times for project-driven shipments.
