How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging by size and shape: double‑wall boxes for small finials; sturdy wood crates for tall, heavy, or multiple pieces. Add tip guards, foam blocks, and VCI wrap to protect finishes.
- Immobilize each finial inside the container. Use a custom cradle or padded U‑brackets around the spire; fill voids with dense foam, not peanuts. Example: a 24" copper finial rides in a carpeted cradle.
- Palletize boxes/crates with two-way banding and corner boards. Keep the center of gravity low; add “This End Up” arrows and top‑load cones if points protrude.
- On the BOL, write: “Roof finials, metal, NOI, boxed/crated — Class 200.” No density entry required. Photograph the packout and request top‑load only if the design is delicate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Class 200 fixed by packaging avoids density disputes, reclass fees, and audit delays.
- Lower claim risk: tip guards, cradles, and proper crating protect sharp points and finishes, preventing jobsite delays and replacement costs.
- Cost control: crate multiple finials together to improve stackability and reduce cubic charges; consolidate pickups with other building metalwork to meet LTL minimums.
- Faster tendering: non‑hazmat, clear description speeds quoting and carrier acceptance, improving schedule reliability for roofing projects.
