How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 36590 and Class 70 on the BOL, and specify “frames only” to avoid confusion with glazing or prism panels.
- Bundle frames flat with dunnage between layers, use edge protectors, and apply steel or heavy poly banding; shrink wrap alone is not sufficient.
- Palletize for forklift handling and urban deliveries; for loose singles or custom shapes, consider a wood crate to shield corners and mounting lugs.
- Note site restrictions for sidewalk or vault deliveries (liftgate, appointment, limited access), and mark orientation if frames have directional hardware.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating minimizes reclass disputes and helps lock in predictable LTL quotes.
- Non-hazardous commodity streamlines documentation and carrier selection, reducing scheduling delays.
- Proper bundling and palletizing cut OS&D risk, lowering claim exposure and accessorials like rewrap or special handling.
- Consolidating multiple frames per pallet improves handling efficiency and reduces freight cost per frame.
