How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Validate material, finish, and lengths to choose protection; wrap galvanized or powder‑coated jambs with foam and edge guards to prevent rub marks.
- Bundle sticks by opening size; add spacer blocks, cap ends, and band to a pallet so long members don't bow; mark Do Not Stack for lengths over 7 ft.
- Note longest piece, total count, and orientation on the BOL; request overlength handling for items over 96 in to avoid fees and rehandling.
- For jobsite drops, specify liftgate or forklift access, and crate custom jambs with attached hardware to keep frames square during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Damage‑resistant bundling protects corners and finishes, reducing OS&D claims and costly rework at the site.
- Correct overlength notation prevents surprise accessorials and improves dock routing, cutting cycle time and freight spend.
- Palletized, labeled packs speed receiving and staging for installers, lowering jobsite labor and laydown costs.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps secure better LTL rates during peak periods.
