How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship only in packages per NMFC: box or bundle posts with foam spacers, and isolate mixed-metal joints with plastic wrap to prevent abrasion and galvanic staining.
- Protect ends and edges with caps and corner guards; for lengths over 6–8 ft, strap packages to a pallet with runners to prevent bowing and tip-overs.
- Rate at Class 85 (fixed class). Provide piece count and package dimensions for the bill of lading to avoid reweigh or reclass charges.
- Plan site deliveries: add limited access or liftgate if needed. Note potential overlength fees for 8–12 ft posts and request no-stack cones when appropriate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costing: a fixed Class 85 removes density disputes and streamlines comparative rate shopping across carriers.
- Lower damages: packaged ornamental metalwork travels better with required padding and end protection, preserving finishes and reducing claim risk.
- Quicker tendering: non-hazardous status minimizes documentation, accelerating pickup approvals and reducing admin time.
- Fewer exceptions: clear length and packaging details prevent accessorial surprises, improving jobsite scheduling and total landed cost.
