How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Decide on assembled vs. knocked-down. Oversized assembled spirals often exceed standard LTL height or diameter; disassemble into center column, treads, and landings to fit palletized LTL.
- Package by component: block and crate the center column, nest and band treads with edge protectors, wrap with foam and corrosion inhibitor for steel. Use 4-way skids sized to prevent overhang.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Stairs, circular/spiral, metal (non-aluminum) – NMFC 37245,” include piece count, largest diameter, longest length, and photos or shop drawings to reduce inspections.
- Plan handling: mark center of gravity, add fork pocket clearance, and avoid mixed loose parts. For heavy landings, request docks or forklifts at both ends instead of liftgate service.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-sized packaging lets you move parts LTL instead of dedicated flatbed, cutting transport costs while meeting jobsite schedule needs.
- Detailed descriptions tied to NMFC 37245 minimize reclass and reweigh charges, improving rate predictability and avoiding rebills.
- Damage control through proper blocking, nesting, and corrosion protection reduces repainting and fit-up rework, accelerating installation.
- Clear componentization (column, treads, landings) speeds carrier handling and claims resolution, protecting margins on custom fabrications.
