How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the freight as “aluminum staircases, NOI—other than stair treads” and state whether it’s shipping loose or in packages to lock in Class 300.
- For packaged units, build a rigid crate or A‑frame and band top and bottom; for loose pieces, wrap edges, add foam guards, and block to a skid.
- Mark center of gravity, lift points, and “Do Not Stack.” Use padded slings or soft straps—avoid chains that can dent or scratch aluminum.
- Book jobsite or limited-access services if needed, and confirm carrier maximum length to prevent unexpected oversize or handling fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 300 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing rating disputes.
- Clear “other than stair treads” wording prevents misclassification and costly reclass charges.
- Rigid packaging and protected edges cut damage risk, lowering claims and project delays.
- Planning accessorials and length constraints upfront helps control LTL costs and transit timelines.
