How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product fits: aluminum thresholds or sills, or aluminum combined with rubber/flexible plastic. Different materials may require a different NMFC.
- Use boxes or 150‑lb test fiberboard containers. Cap ends, wrap edges, and interleave pieces to prevent scuffing during transit.
- For long lengths (e.g., 72–96 inches), palletize boxed units with corner boards and avoid overhang. Strap securely and keep labels visible on the long side.
- Declare Class 70 and non-hazardous. List piece count and total weight, and note overall length to anticipate any carrier overlength fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 delivers predictable LTL rates and simpler quoting for construction suppliers and door fabricators.
- 150‑lb test packaging standard lowers in-transit damage risk for slender extrusions, cutting claim expenses.
- Accurate NMFC mapping reduces reclass penalties and shipment delays at cross-docks.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines paperwork, accelerating time to delivery.
