How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. On the BOL, select NMFC 37530 at Class 70 and describe as “Balusters, wood” with the exact packaging type (boxes, crates, or bundles) and piece count.
  2. For bundles: align ends, cap or pad tips, add edge protectors, and apply at least two straps every 3–4 feet; wrap to prevent scuffs and moisture spotting.
  3. For boxes/crates: separate spindles with dividers, immobilize with foam or corrugated, mount to a pallet with no overhang, and mark Fragile Turned Woodwork.
  4. Load lengthwise on pallet runners, avoid stacking on turned profiles, use corner boards, and photo-document packaging to minimize reclass or damage claims.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 rating makes quotes predictable and reduces reclass risk.
  • Flexible packaging (bundles, boxes, crates) helps control material and labor costs.
  • Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and supports faster transit planning.
  • Protective packing reduces dents on delicate profiles, cutting claim and reship expenses.
