How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book as “Columns, solid” under NMFC 37640. Do not mix with hollow, composite, or metal columns; review notes 37504 and 37662 if you have mixed materials.
- Package on full-length skids or in custom crates. Add edge/corner protectors, wrap to limit moisture, and band over sacrificial blocks to avoid surface dents.
- Declare the longest piece length on the BOL to avoid surprise overlength fees. Use dunnage and chocks so round or turned columns cannot roll in transit.
- For jobsite deliveries, confirm access and unloading. Long pieces often require a forklift or boom; most liftgates are unsuitable for lengths over 96 inches.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density calculations, reducing reclass risk and speeding quotes.
- Correct item naming (solid columns) helps prevent inspection charges and protects negotiated LTL rates.
- Non-hazardous woodwork moves through standard networks, improving transit reliability and cutoffs.
- Durable packaging reduces finish damage and claim costs, keeping construction timelines on track.
