How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item on the BOL as “Hardwood flooring, varnished or waxed, boxed/metal‑strapped bundles — NMFC 37860, Class 55” to prevent reclassification.
- Shield finished faces: use interleaving sheets, edge guards, and corner caps under steel or poly straps so the varnish/wax isn’t scuffed during transit.
- Build tight, stable unit loads: place boxes or bundles on 4‑way pallets with no overhang, add a rigid top deck or slip sheet, and mark “Do Not Stack” if finish risk exists.
- Control moisture and movement: poly-wrap or use VCI where humidity is a concern, add dunnage to keep bundles off the trailer floor, and re-tension straps if bundles settle.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 rating streamlines quoting and avoids density disputes, saving time on every LTL bid.
- Lower class relative to many building materials can reduce per‑CWT spend for distributors and installers.
- Finish-safe packaging practices cut claim risk on scuffs and edge crush, protecting margins and customer satisfaction.
- Boxed or metal‑strapped bundles handle efficiently on docks, improving throughput and reducing accessorial delays.
