How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging by length: use rigid corrugated boxes with end caps for shorter runs; for long pieces, follow Package 2109—tight, banded bundles on skids with edge protectors.
- Support the entire length. Place dunnage every 3–4 feet and avoid overhang beyond the pallet to prevent bowing or crush damage on 10–16 ft mouldings.
- Protect finishes and coated faces. Add slipsheets between profiles, wrap primed or painted pieces, and never strap directly over decorative surfaces.
- Document precisely on the BOL: “NMFC 38035 Moldings—boxes or PKG 2109; per Notes 38036/38037,” include piece/bundle counts, full dimensions, and note “Do Not Stack/Long Freight” when applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC usage with Notes 38036/38037 reduces reclass fees and surprise inspections, stabilizing your LTL rates.
- Package 2109 or boxed protection cuts claim risk on long, fragile profiles, lowering damage costs and warranty replacements.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines scheduling, accelerating pickups during peak construction seasons.
- Consistent packing and clear labeling improve dock throughput for millwork shops and lumberyards, trimming handling time and accessorials like over-length surcharges.
