How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC item 37504 and Class 70 on the BOL; for example, “Newel posts, wood, 6 pcs bundled on 96-inch skid” to prevent reclass fees.
- Bundle posts with edge protectors and soft dunnage; cap turned finials, sleeve finished pieces, then stretch wrap. Crate high-value hardwoods to avoid dents and scuffs.
- Plan for length handling. Pieces over 96 inches can trigger overlength fees—use full-length pallets, mark Do Not Stack, and position bands away from decorative profiles.
- Control moisture during transit. Use poly sheeting and desiccant for kiln-dried or stained posts to limit warp or finish damage from humidity and road spray.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density work, enabling fast cross-carrier quotes and fewer surprises in LTL rates.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier availability and reduces compliance overhead for millwork shipments.
- Properly citing NMFC 37504 improves audit trails, minimizes reclass disputes, and strengthens freight claims.
- Damage-resistant bundling or crating cuts OS&D, protecting margins on custom stair components and improving customer satisfaction.
