How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and book as NMFC 38407, Class 150, with packaging marked as “packages” and note “KD flat” on the BOL. Example: pool enclosure kit, metal frame with plastic panels — KD flat.
- Protect edges and corners of plastic panels with foam or honeycomb pads. Separate metal rails from plastic sheets with slip sheets to prevent abrasion during vibration.
- Load longest frame members inboard on a sturdy pallet or crate to avoid overlength handling fees. Add a top frame and “Do Not Stack” cones to prevent crush damage.
- Verify any NMFC note references (see Note, item 38408) for definition and packaging expectations, and include a detailed piece count/inventory to reduce OS&D disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 eliminates density calculations, speeding up quoting and reducing reclass penalties for pool enclosure kits.
- KD-flat packaging minimizes cube compared to assembled frames, improving trailer utilization and lowering LTL transportation costs.
- Clear NMFC mapping lets distributors and installers ship nationwide with standard carriers, improving lead times during peak pool season.
- Non-hazardous materials simplify documentation and avoid HazMat surcharges, keeping landed costs predictable.
