How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the unit’s NMFC item and note that a fixed class isn’t published here; document steel construction, overall dims, and packing (crated or skidded).
- Package for rigidity: block on heavy timber skids, add cross-bracing, protect doors and control panels, and band to prevent shift during LTL handling.
- Plan handling: mark lift points and center of gravity, use long forks or a spreader bar, and specify no-stack or top-only if panels could buckle.
- Choose the right service: standard LTL for regular footprints, volume LTL or partial truckload for oversized smoke houses, and schedule plant delivery appointments.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce reclass and surprise charges by documenting dimensions and packing for portable steel enclosures.
- Prevent costly damage claims with bracing, edge guards, and securement that protects doors, seams, and welded frames.
- Optimize spend by selecting LTL versus partial truckload based on footprint and height, not just weight.
- Bundle racks, vents, and hardware on companion pallets to cut accessorials and speed dock turns.
