How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Provide engineered drawings with overall dimensions, unit weight, lift points, and center-of-gravity so carriers can assign the correct flatbed or step-deck and plan rigging.
- Mount each section on a steel skid or bolted frame, then block and brace with hardwood dunnage; add corner protectors and chain softeners to prevent spalling and edge chipping.
- Confirm route and permits for oversize/overweight moves; schedule cranes or telehandlers at both ends to avoid detention, and ship fully cured units only.
- List commodity as “Houses or Buildings, NOI, reinforced concrete, NMFC 38450” on the BOL, mark Not Stackable, and note any rebar protrusions covered with caps.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC reference reduces reclass risk and unexpected rebills, stabilizing your landed cost on heavy construction components.
- Engineered skids and proper bracing lower OS&D and rework, protecting high-value architectural finishes and project timelines.
- Permit and equipment planning up front shortens dwell time and crane standby, cutting accessorials and site disruption.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and carrier selection, enabling faster tendering across flatbed and heavy-haul networks.
