How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Measure the packaged unit and calculate density: L×W×H in inches ÷ 1728 for cubic feet, then weight ÷ cubic feet to pick the correct class (50–400).
  2. Pack vinyl, rubber, or foam bumpers in cartons or crates per Item 170: cap valve stems on inflatable fenders, add edge guards, and strap to a pallet with no overhang.
  3. Bundle multiple light fenders into one package to raise density and lower class, but avoid crushing shapes that could cause deformation or claims.
  4. Show NMFC 38655, packaging type “packages,” and the calculated PCF on the BOL; verify any material-specific exceptions in Note item 38656 before tendering.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density entry prevents reclass/reweigh fees on bulky, lightweight marine fenders.
  • Item 170-compliant packaging reduces punctures and scuffs, lowering OS&D claims and customer returns.
  • Smart bundling and right-size cartons increase PCF, often improving class and cutting LTL freight spend.
  • Clear BOL notation (NMFC 38655 + PCF) speeds quotes, minimizes disputes, and improves carrier acceptance.
