How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the correct NMFC subclass under item 39070 by noting condition (assembled vs knockdown) and protection (boxed vs wrapped package); this determines the class within 70–200.
- Package for metal edges and protrusions: cap chimneys, pad grates, and use double‑wall corrugated boxes or banded packages with corner boards and a plastic liner to prevent soot transfer.
- Stabilize and mark orientation: place the base down, block and brace inside the box, and label This Side Up to prevent top‑heavy tipping during LTL handling.
- Document specs for quoting and pickup: list piece count, packaging type (box or package), overall dimensions, and weight even though density does not set the class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate subclass selection avoids reclassification fees and helps you capture the lowest applicable class within the 70–200 range.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and broadens carrier options, reducing administrative friction and transit delays.
- Using boxed or well-banded packages improves conveyability and stackability, cutting damage risk and downstream claim costs.
- Knockdown packing and tight bracing reduce cube and breakage, improving freight rates and keeping retailer scorecards clean.
