How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Measure exterior length, width, and height including latches or skids, then compute density: weight ÷ (L×W×H ÷ 1728). Example: 48×40×36 in at 150 lb = 40 cu ft → 3.75 pcf.
  2. Select packaging to match build: flat-packed wood panels go in double-wall boxes with edge guards; assembled or metal units should be crated with internal blocking and foam.
  3. Secure moving parts. Tie doors, remove loose hardware into a labeled bag, pad bars and corners, and band the box or crate to a pallet to keep the center of gravity stable.
  4. For shows or shelters, partition a crate to ship multiple cages. Record individual item dimensions and weights on the BOL to support density-based class within 92.5–250.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven class lets you reduce freight spend by nesting panels, disassembling roofs, or tightening pack-outs to raise pcf and potentially lower the class.
  • Accurate dimensions and weights prevent carrier reclass fees and inspection delays, protecting margins on bulky pet enclosures and exhibition benches.
  • Crating improves stackability and protects protruding bars and frames, cutting damage claims and downtime for events, retailers, and animal care facilities.
  • Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, helping you secure competitive LTL rates and predictable transit.
