How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify which of the two published classes fits your shipment; packaging condition (crated or palletized versus loose or bundled) typically determines whether it rates lower or higher within the 85–300 range.
- Protect roundness and finishes: nest hoops, add foam at contact points, band with plastic strapping and edge protectors, and block inside the crate so pieces can’t ovalize during transit.
- Manage dimensions for LTL: keep bundles on a 48x40 pallet when possible and limit longest piece length to avoid overlength fees; clearly note any pieces over 96 inches on the BOL.
- Separate and label hardware kits and brackets, list ring diameters and piece counts on the paperwork, and photograph packaging before pickup to support smooth claims handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Matching packaging to the correct class reduces reclass fees and unexpected carrier charges, stabilizing LTL quotes for construction and facility maintenance projects.
- Damage prevention measures keep cages round and scratch-free, cutting jobsite rework time and replacement costs for powder-coated or galvanized components.
- Nesting and bundling improve trailer cube efficiency, helping secure better rates and reducing the chance of cubic minimum charges on lightweight, bulky shapes.
- Clear, non-hazardous description broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, leading to faster pickups and fewer accessorial delays on time-sensitive orders.
