How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 39660 and Class 200 on the BOL; describe as “exposed, nonflammable film, ≤35 mm, boxed,” and select hazardous handling if your carrier flags it.
- Use rigid cartons (ECT 44+), tight inner packing around reels or microfilm cases, and keep cans upright or banded inside the box to stop shifting.
- Control heat and humidity—avoid hot trailers and long dwell times; request inside pickup during summer to protect emulsion and image stability.
- For multiple cartons, palletize with corner boards and stretch wrap; mark “Fragile—Do Not Stack,” and segregate from chemicals or odor-heavy freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
