How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. State NMFC 39660 and Class 200 on the BOL; describe as “exposed, nonflammable film, ≤35 mm, boxed,” and select hazardous handling if your carrier flags it.
  2. Use rigid cartons (ECT 44+), tight inner packing around reels or microfilm cases, and keep cans upright or banded inside the box to stop shifting.
  3. Control heat and humidity—avoid hot trailers and long dwell times; request inside pickup during summer to protect emulsion and image stability.
  4. For multiple cartons, palletize with corner boards and stretch wrap; mark “Fragile—Do Not Stack,” and segregate from chemicals or odor-heavy freight.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
