How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your product fits Candles, NOI and reference Note item 39811; use sturdy boxes or Package 2213 per NMFC, with inserts for jar or taper candles.
- Calculate density for Item 170: total weight ÷ cubic feet. Example: 48×40×40 in at 600 lb ≈ 44.44 cu ft → 13.5 PCF; use the resulting class within 50–400.
- Pack to prevent melt and deformation—avoid hot trailers in summer, add liners, and keep cartons off trailer floors where heat builds.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Candles, NOI, NMFC 39810, Item 170,” include piece and pallet counts, and mark “Box” or “PKG 2213.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-driven pricing lets compact, heavier candle shipments earn lower freight classes and reduce LTL costs.
- Using compliant boxes or Package 2213 cuts damage risk and claims for fragile jar and pillar styles, protecting margins.
- Accurate NMFC 39810 and Item 170 entries prevent reclass/reweigh fees and accelerate carrier throughput.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies tendering, improving capacity during peak seasons.
