How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 40210 on the BOL and note “no powder or primers included; inert equipment” for lifeline throwers and muzzle-loading cannons or parts.
- Protect barrels and breech areas with caps and foam, then crate or case the assembly; band the crate to a skid to prevent roll or tip during LTL handling.
- Coil and bag lifeline rope separately from the launcher to avoid tangling, add moisture barrier for marine gear, and mark orientation arrows on the crate.
- Ship loose parts (trunnions, carriages, touch holes, hardware) in labeled inner boxes, then block and brace inside the master crate to keep Class 100 rating consistent.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 100 for complete units and parts, simplifying LTL quotes and rate shopping.
- Non-hazardous listing reduces hazmat surcharges and minimizes compliance steps when shipped without propellant.
- Single NMFC covers lifeline throwers, muzzle-loaders, and components, streamlining SKU consolidation and paperwork.
- Proper crating and documentation cut damage risk and inspection delays, improving claims outcomes and cycle time.
