How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State “Empty dosage capsules — NMFC 40510, Class 200” on the BOL and select boxes as the packaging; include carton and pallet counts—no density entry needed.
- Protect against moisture and odors: line cartons with clean poly bags, add desiccants if appropriate, and keep away from coffee, spices, or cleaners that capsules can absorb.
- Use crush-rated cartons and avoid heavy top loads; add corner boards and tight stretch wrap so light, high-cube boxes don’t deform in transit.
- Label cartons “Keep Dry” and “Do Not Stack,” add orientation arrows, and request inside pickup/delivery when temperature swings could affect capsule integrity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 eliminates density math, speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes and surprise fees.
- Non-hazardous classification avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, streamlining booking and compliance.
- Moisture and odor control lowers rejection risk for pharma and nutraceutical fillers, protecting brand and reducing returns.
- Standard boxed format improves pallet planning and carton yield per skid, cutting handling time and cost per unit shipped.
