Note 40776: NOTE-Applies only on used shipping carriers or containers for the transportation of motor vehicle parts, which are being returned via the carrier(s) that handled the filled, inbound move.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item type under 40775 (e.g., IBC totes, wire carriers, airline containers, reels) and note if it’s shipped empty or with inner dunnage; the class is density-based.
- Measure and minimize cube: nest wire carriers, stack empty crates, or collapse foldable racks to boost density and improve the freight class.
- Prepare edges and contact points: cap sharp steel corners, band wood-and-steel frames, and use corner protectors so strapping doesn’t deform the carrier.
- For loose or skid-mounted units, block and brace on the trailer using bolsters or cradles; label “Empty Container/For Return” when applicable to avoid reclass or hazmat confusion.
