How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 41630 and Class 85 on the BOL using the exact description: “Lipstick cases, brass or steel, empty, with or without inserts or slides, in boxes.”
- Pack in sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or foam cells so metal finishes don’t rub; polybag or paper-wrap each case to reduce scuffs and tarnish.
- Palletize cartons on 40x48 pallets, keep stack heights conservative to avoid crush, add edge protectors, and shrink-wrap tightly for stable, metal-on-metal-free transport.
- Since the class is fixed, provide accurate piece count and actual weight; note non-hazardous status and that inserts or slides are included or absent to prevent reclassification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces density disputes, helping avoid reweigh/reclass fees for metal cosmetic components.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier acceptance and keeps accessorials down, streamlining LTL planning.
- Correct “boxed” packaging with interior protection lowers surface-damage claims on plated brass or steel finishes, protecting brand quality.
- Clear NMFC alignment speeds audits and billing, shortening cycle times from pickup to invoicing for cosmetics supply chains.
