How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density using the packed unit: measure outer box or crate dimensions, convert to cubic feet, divide the total weight by cubic feet, then match to Class 50–400.
  2. Match packaging to the product: foam‑lined coffin cartons or plywood crates for caskets; heavy skids, cradle blocking, and corner guards for concrete grave vaults.
  3. Plan handling before pickup: arrange liftgate or forklift for vaults, add “This Side Up” and tip‑n‑tell labels, use pallet straps and stretch wrap to prevent shifting.
  4. Describe clearly on the BOL: “Caskets/Coffins or Grave Vaults, boxed/crated, NOI, density ___ pcf, NMFC 41670,” include piece count and request no‑stack if needed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based classing rewards heavier, denser vaults with lower classes, trimming LTL charges while lighter coffin shipments price appropriately.
  • Purpose-built boxing/crating reduces damage and redelivery, protecting time‑sensitive funeral schedules and your relationship with directors and cemeteries.
  • Clean NMFC usage minimizes reclass and inspection fees, speeding audits and improving quote accuracy for multi-stop or regional distribution.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier selection and simplifies insurance, supporting dependable transit for sensitive, discreet shipments.
