How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy cartons (double-wall for metal casters); add dividers or foam and bag bolts, axles, and bearings inside the box to prevent abrasion.
- Keep each box at a manageable weight (around 40–50 lb); palletize multiple boxes with no overhang, add corner boards, then stretch-wrap tightly.
- Mark two sides with part numbers, quantity, and gross weight; include “Boxed Casters - Class 65” to speed terminal checks and prevent reclass delays.
- When mixing sizes, place inner packs or small cartons in a master box so heavier casters don’t punch through lighter packaging.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 65 typically yields better LTL base rates than higher classes, lowering cost per hundredweight on bulk caster shipments.
- Boxed presentation reduces missing hardware and damage, cutting OS&D claims and reshipments for OEM and MRO orders.
- Single NOI listing covers various materials—steel, rubber, polyurethane—simplifying quoting and TMS setup across product lines.
- Clear labels and pallet-ready boxes move faster through docks, minimizing inspections, reclass risk, and accessorial charges.
