How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Deflate bladders fully, cap valves, and bag hoses and manifolds before boxing to prevent punctures from loose fittings or sharp edges.
- Separate steel or aluminum plates from inflatable pads using corrugated dividers and 2 in foam; add edge guards so hardware can’t abrade the air cells.
- Mark kits clearly: list caster size, pad count, hose lengths, and accessory hardware; add “Do Not Cut With Knife” to protect bladders during receiving.
- On the BOL, reference NMFC 41740 Class 150, note piece count and “boxed”; density is not required, reducing the chance of reclass or inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 150 eliminates density calculations, speeding LTL quotes and tendering for air‑inflatable handling kits.
- Lower reclass risk: packaging in boxes matches tariff language, minimizing additional charges and disputes with carriers.
- Fewer handling restrictions: non‑hazardous components move easily across carrier networks, improving lane coverage and lead times.
- Better claim outcomes: clear item description and protective boxing reduce transit damage and strengthen documentation if issues arise.
