NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Note NMFC 41750 and Class 70 on the BOL, and clearly describe the commodity as “Nickel Spent Catalyst, Drums (Non-Hazmat).”
  2. Palletize tight-head drums (steel or HDPE) with bungs fully secured; use drum boards, edge protectors, two bands, and stretch wrap for a 4-drum pallet.
  3. Record accurate gross weight per drum and per pallet—spent nickel catalyst is dense; verified scale weights help prevent carrier reweighs.
  4. Arrange pickup/delivery needs up front (dock, liftgate, pallet jack) and schedule appointments commonly required by recyclers or metal reclaimers.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 removes density disputes, reducing reclass charges and billing delays.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges.
  • Correct drum palletization minimizes handling risk and OS&D, preserving recoverable nickel value.
  • Consolidating drums into fewer, full pallets can lower minimum charges and improve per‑pound LTL rates.
