How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Cellulose, NOI, in packages — NMFC 41930, Class 100” on the BOL to prevent reclass and speed carrier acceptance.
- Choose tight, leak-free packaging: multiwall bags with poly liners for fibers/fluff, fiber drums for granules, or sturdy corrugated boxes for sheets and rolls. Unitize with stretch wrap and corner boards.
- Control moisture exposure since cellulose is absorbent: add liners or desiccants, use a top cap, and keep pallets off the floor with dry pallets or slip sheets.
- Build stable pallets: 40x48 in. footprint, no overhang, limit height per crush strength, and band or strap where needed. Example: 25 kg multiwall bags, 50 per pallet, cross-stacked and wrapped.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single fixed Class 100 simplifies quoting and auditing, reducing reweigh/reclass fees and shortening tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Right-sized, sealed packaging minimizes product leakage and claims risk, avoiding cleanup accessorials and refused freight at terminals.
- Consistent classification across varied cellulose forms (NOI) streamlines SKU expansion and budgeting for recurring LTL lanes.
- Optimized palletization and clear labeling improve dock handling efficiency, lowering handling damage and boosting on-time performance.
