How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify your product meets the NMFC note for item 41962 (cement shipped as a liquid or paste). Include the SDS and the correct DOT Proper Shipping Name and UN/NA number if regulated.
  2. Package to contain leaks: use lined, leakproof inner containers and absorbent material inside heavy-duty boxes, or tighthead/closed-head drums with secure bungs; UN-rated packaging if required by HazMat rules.
  3. Palletize for containment and stability—no overhang, band and stretch-wrap, use drip trays or poly sheeting under boxes, and label orientation (This Side Up) and HazMat markings as applicable on each package.
  4. Book LTL as Class 60 with HazMat service. Add a 24-hour emergency response number on the BOL, and coordinate pickup to avoid temperature extremes that could cause setting or thickening.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 60 keeps base LTL rates competitive for dense cement products, while accurate HazMat setup avoids costly re-bills and carrier refusals.
  • Compliant packaging and clear spill containment reduce cleanup fees, damage claims, and delays from leaks during sortation or cross-dock transfers.
  • Precise NMFC and paperwork (SDS, UN/NA, emergency contact) streamline carrier acceptance and speed terminal handling, improving transit reliability.
  • Simple, non-density-based classification cuts admin time—no need to calculate PCF—so quoting and routing are faster and more predictable.
