How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes and seal all seams to prevent any seepage from cans or tubes of pipe joint cement or tool joint compound.
- Quote Class 55 using the shipment’s actual weight; this item is weight-rated, so no density calculation or cube measurement is required.
- Bag each inner container (e.g., 1-qt cans or tins) in a poly liner and add absorbent pads to catch drips, then place snugly in dividers to stop movement.
- Palletize with no overhang, add corner boards, and wrap tightly; mark UP arrows and “Pipe Joint Cement” so handlers keep boxes upright.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 weight-based rating delivers predictable LTL quotes without density disputes, reducing reclass and surprise charges.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, speeding tender and pickup.
- Box-compatible packaging streamlines warehouse kitting and cartonization, improving pick/pack efficiency for repeat shipments.
- Properly packed boxes lower claims risk for viscous compounds and cements, protecting margins and customer satisfaction.
