Notes

Note 43956: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify DOT status on the SDS (Section 14) to confirm the material is not regulated; examples include titanium dioxide, sodium carbonate, and alum.
  2. Calculate density per handling unit: weigh the palletized load, measure L x W x H, and use density to determine the class under Item 170.
  3. Protect moisture-sensitive powders (e.g., calcium chloride, sodium citrate) with poly-lined bags, stretch-wrap, and a top sheet to prevent caking and staining.
  4. Select containment for liquids (carboys or tight-head drums) and use absorbent pads or spill trays; mark This Side Up and secure bungs to prevent seepage.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower freight spend by increasing density where feasible (e.g., IBCs for higher cube efficiency) to achieve a lower class.
  • Avoid hazmat surcharges and special handling since NMFC 43955 covers non-DOT-regulated materials, improving carrier acceptance.
  • Reduce rating disputes by grouping many acids, salts, and oxides under one density-driven item, speeding quotes and audits.
  • Cut claims through packaging tuned to hygroscopic and staining risks, improving on-time, damage-free delivery rates.
