Notes

Note 44516: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 4: Division 4.1, Flammable Solid, other than Self-reactive Material; Division 4.2, Spontaneously Combustible Material; or Division 4.3, Dangerous When Wet Material; as defined in 49 CFR 173.124 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging. For classes applicable to Self-reactive Material, see item 46047.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the hazard division (4.1 flammable solid, 4.2 spontaneously combustible, or 4.3 dangerous when wet) and select U.S. DOT-authorized packaging accordingly; e.g., water-reactive metal hydrides in sealed drums with moisture barriers.
  2. On the BOL, show the proper shipping name, UN/NA number, hazard class/division, packing group, and emergency contact. Reference NMFC 44515 with the note to item 44516, and apply markings like Keep Dry or Flammable Solid as required.
  3. Plan handling and segregation: keep away from water sources, oxidizers, and heat; use covered equipment during rain; add desiccant or inert absorbents for 4.3 goods; and block/braced pallets to prevent shifting.
  4. Book with hazmat-authorized LTL carriers and share SDS plus ERG guide details. Confirm placarding and limited quantity eligibility before pickup to avoid refusals or delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Avoid reclassifications and carrier refusals by matching NMFC 44515 with DOT-authorized packaging, reducing surprise fees and dwell time.
  • Lower claim exposure by controlling moisture and heat for 4.2/4.3 materials, cutting loss costs and service disruptions.
  • Accelerate tender acceptance with complete hazmat documentation and pre-approved carriers, improving on-time performance.
  • Enable predictable rating: with no fixed class shown, costs hinge on weight, lane, and hazmat accessorials—optimized packaging and palletization improve price efficiency.
