Notes

Note 45323: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 9, Miscellaneous Hazardous Material, other than Hazardous Waste, as defined in 49 CFR 173.140 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging. For provisions applicable to Hazardous Waste, see item 196160.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the product fits the NOI scope for NMFC 45322 (e.g., regulated blends, lab chemicals, environmentally hazardous liquids) and isn’t better classified under a specific item; review related notes 45323 and 45324.
  2. Calculate density in pounds per cubic foot for each handling unit: weigh the sealed package and use its outside dimensions to derive PCF, then select the matching density-based class and note it on the BOL.
  3. Use U.S. DOT‑authorized, UN‑rated packaging (e.g., UN1A1 steel drum, UN4G fiberboard box with inner receptacles). Follow closure instructions, add absorbents or overpack as needed, and comply with Item 170.
  4. Prepare hazmat papers and marks: proper shipping name and UN/NA number, hazard class/division and packing group, RQ or Limited Quantity if applicable, and a 24‑hour emergency phone. Alert the carrier about hazmat and segregation needs.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Correct density-driven classing minimizes reclass charges and avoids unexpected hazmat handling fees.
  • Stronger, space‑efficient packaging can raise PCF and lower the freight class, reducing LTL spend.
  • DOT‑compliant packaging and thorough documentation speed terminal processing and cut delay risk.
  • A single NOI item streamlines quoting for varied mixtures, simplifying SKU setup across lanes.
