Notes
Note 45468: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 5, Division 5.1, Oxidizer, as defined in 49 CFR 173.127 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify eligibility: review Note under item 45468 to confirm your oxidizer is NOI; if your product is specifically indexed elsewhere, use that item instead.
- Pack with U.S. DOT-authorized, UN-rated containers (e.g., 4G boxes with compatible inners, 1A1/1H1 drums, certified jerricans) and follow closure instructions; add liners or absorbent if the SDS calls for it.
- Segregate from combustibles, organics, and reducing agents; palletize on clean, compatible dunnage and apply Class 5.1 labels and required markings to each package.
- Document clearly: list NMFC 45467 on the BOL with Proper Shipping Name, UN/NA number, hazard class and packing group (as applicable), plus a 24-hour emergency phone; book a carrier that accepts oxidizers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC selection reduces reclass fees and avoids carrier refusals tied to hazmat documentation gaps.
- DOT-authorized packaging and proper segregation cut spill risk and damage claims, protecting both freight and brand.
- Clean, complete hazmat paperwork speeds dock processing and limits re-tenders, improving on-time performance.
- Predictable hazmat surcharges and compliant packing are easier to budget than penalties or post-shipment adjustments.
