Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
45615.00 Poisonous or Toxic Materials, see Note, item 45616, in U.S. DOT-authorized packaging:

Notes

Note 45616: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 6, Division 6.1, Poisonous or Toxic Material, as defined in 49 CFR 173.132 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm your commodity fits NMFC 45615 by checking the SDS (Section 14) for Class 6.1 and packing group. If a named item applies under Note, item 45616, use that instead.
  2. Select U.S. DOT-authorized UN performance packaging matched to the packing group and compatibility. Example: UN 4G fiberboard with glass inners, absorbent, and leakproof closures.
  3. Prepare hazmat shipping papers with proper shipping name, UN/NA number, Class 6.1, packing group, and 24‑hour emergency contact. Apply Poison labels, UN marks, and orientation arrows for liquids.
  4. Book with a hazmat-approved LTL carrier, pre-advise terminal, and segregate from foodstuffs. Use overpack markings and consider temperature protection or exclusive use when required.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Correct use of NMFC 45615 reduces rebills, reclass fees, and carrier refusals tied to misdeclared toxic goods.
  • DOT-authorized packaging lowers spill risk and claim exposure, protecting brand and minimizing cleanup liabilities.
  • Complete, accurate hazmat documentation speeds carrier acceptance, shortens terminal dwell, and improves on-time performance.
  • A flexible umbrella item streamlines quoting for diverse lab samples or agrochemical SKUs without reclassifying each shipment.
