How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Quote and book as "Additives, metal pickling" NMFC 4590, Class 55; no density calculation is required for rating.
  2. Use tight-head steel or HDPE drums for bulk shipments; torque bungs, apply tamper seals, and add poly liners if the additive could attack metal.
  3. Keep drums upright on pallets with drum rings or ratchet straps, corner boards, and anti-slip sheets; block and brace to prevent roll-over.
  4. Attach the SDS and cite Note, item 4592 on the BOL; note temperature limits (avoid freeze/overheat) and request liftgate or drum truck if needed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 stabilizes pricing—no PCF math or density disputes, reducing reclass fees and surprises.
  • Bulk drum format speeds handling and trims touches, lowering accessorials while keeping plant operations supplied on schedule.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and carrier restrictions, expanding carrier choices and lane coverage.
  • Clear NMFC 4590 identification strengthens claims defensibility and curbs leakage-related write-offs through proper drum handling.
