NMFC 46030 - Coal Tar/Petroleum Resins | Class 55

Note 46031: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

1. Confirm the product is not regulated for DOT hazmat per Note 46031 and list “NMFC 46030, Class 55, non-hazardous” on the BOL; include SDS pages that show no hazard labels required.
2. Choose packaging based on form: pellets/flakes in lined bags inside boxes, sticky or softening resins in lined fiber drums, or Package 2501-compliant containers to prevent leakage or fusion.
3. Weigh each handling unit and capture gross weights on labels and the BOL; this item is classed by weight at a fixed Class 55, so no density calculation is needed.
4. Palletize tightly with corner boards and stretch wrap; keep units dry and away from heat sources. Use “Do Not Double Stack” if resin may deform or fuse under load.
