How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the item type and dominant material: paper literature, vinyl banners, foam-core posters, corrugated plastic signs, or knock-down POP displays. Note this on the BOL when the exact NMFC item is unclear.
- Match packaging to format: roll banners into heavy-wall tubes with end caps; ship flat prints in double-wall cartons with corner protectors; bag and master-carton display components before palletizing.
- Build ship-ready pallets: 40x48 footprint when possible, corner boards and a top sheet, stretch wrap to containment, and keep height near 48–60 inches for stackability.
- Document details up front: piece count, largest carton dimensions, total weight, and a short description like “non-hazardous promotional materials.” Photos of packing help prevent reclass or claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce freight spend by sending displays knocked down instead of assembled, lowering cube and minimizing oversize charges.
- Cut reclass and inspection fees by clearly stating materials and packaging method, enabling accurate NMFC mapping at pickup.
- Lower damage risk with edge protection, tubes for rolled graphics, and secure pallets—avoiding costly reprints and rush replenishments.
- Faster dock handling and fewer delays through consistent pallet heights, clear labeling, and concise packing lists for kitted campaigns.
