How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this NOI when shipping soda or generic sodium-based salts not otherwise indexed; include the exact chemical name and concentration on the BOL.
- Pull the SDS to verify hazmat status, proper shipping name, UN/NA number, and packing group if applicable; add required labels and emergency contact details.
- Package solids securely: poly-lined paper bags or drums for powders, or certified bulk sacks; palletize tight, wrap to the deck, and keep product dry to prevent caking.
- Confirm compatibility and segregation with carrier (e.g., away from acids or food when required), and request hazmat-capable equipment before tendering.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Prevents reclass and inspection fees by aligning NOI usage with SDS-backed details and accurate BOL descriptions.
- Cuts damage and cleanup costs through moisture-resistant packaging and fully enclosed, properly labeled pallets.
- Improves quote accuracy by providing container type, piece count, and hazmat data so carriers can rate without delays.
- Reduces handling spend by consolidating into bulk sacks where feasible and selecting hazmat-certified carriers to avoid refusals.
