How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sealed inner liners: bag chips in a heavy poly liner, then place inside a sturdy corrugated carton or fiber drum to contain dust and preserve aroma.
- Palletize tight: keep cartons within 48x40 pallets with no overhang, apply stretch wrap and corner boards, and add a top sheet to control chip migration.
- Moisture and odor control: choose lined cartons or drums if stored near liquids or strong-smelling freight so wood chips don’t absorb odors or humidity.
- Label clearly: mark “Wood Chips—Brewing/Vinegar, NMFC 47630, Class 85” and include piece count and weight to speed inspections and prevent reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 85 rating, simplifying LTL quotes for both small cartons and full pallets.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat fees and specialized paperwork, reducing accessorial risk.
- Proper inner-bag plus outer-carton/drum packing reduces spill claims and detention from cleanup.
- Clear NMFC description cuts inspection delays and reclasses, protecting margins and delivery timelines.
