How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product is nonhazardous via the SDS; if it’s corrosive, flammable, or oxidizing, it won’t qualify for NMFC 48580.
- Choose listed packaging—boxes, bags, drums, pails, or IBCs—and seal liquids with liners and leak‑proof caps; add absorbent and poly bagging for carton shipments.
- Record accurate gross weight per handling unit; Class 70 is weight‑based, so no density calc needed (e.g., 48 lb case of soap bars, 900 lb pallet of detergent bags, 2,200 lb IBC of cleaner).
- Palletize tightly with stretch wrap and banding; label bills and pallets with “Cleaning Compounds, NOI – NMFC 48580, Class 70” to avoid reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass disputes—fewer surprise charges and faster rate approvals.
- Wide packaging acceptance (from boxes to IBCs) lets operations ship liquids, powders, and bars under one item number.
- Nonhazardous status expands carrier options and trims hazmat surcharges, paperwork, and transit restrictions.
- Clear NMFC alignment improves claims defensibility and strengthens cost control across detergents, degreasers, and soaps.
