How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your freight matches the Clocks Group, then select the exact NMFC item for wall clocks, clock movements, or parts and place that item number on the BOL.
- Protect delicate pieces: remove pendulums and weights, secure hands, pad glass faces, and use foam-in-place or molded inserts in double-wall cartons.
- For large floor clocks, crate upright with internal blocking, add corner boards, and strap to a pallet; apply tilt and shock indicators for carrier handling.
- Describe materials (wood, metal, glass) and packaging (carton or crate) on paperwork, and include dimensions and weight to support accurate LTL rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Using the correct group and item prevents costly reclass and inspection delays for fragile, high-value clock shipments.
- Damage-mitigating packaging lowers claim rates by protecting gears, glass faces, and movements, improving delivery performance.
- Clear NMFC identification streamlines quoting with carriers and 3PLs, yielding more consistent LTL rates and fewer rebills.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and speeds routing, reducing time-to-tender for seasonal or time-sensitive orders.
