How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the item as an empty clock case and note the material (wood, metal, or plastic). Include whether any glass panels or doors are installed to set handling expectations.
- Package wall or mantel cases in double-wall cartons with foam corners and rigid edge protectors; float the case inside with void fill so it cannot shift.
- Crate tall floor cases for LTL. Strap the crate upright to a pallet, avoid overhang, and mark This Side Up and Do Not Stack for safer transit.
- Quote and tender using NMFC 48660 on the BOL. Add packaging type (carton or crated), piece count, and dimensions to prevent reweigh/reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC reference streamlines carrier quotes and minimizes back-and-forth even when the class is listed as N/A.
- Right-size packaging and palletizing reduce accessorials tied to oversize handling and help avoid damage-related claims on fragile finishes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies paperwork, accelerating pickup and transit planning.
- Investing in protective crating for tall or antique cases cuts claim risk—often saving more than the crate cost over a few shipments.
