How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity on the BOL as “Coke, NOI” and note the form (breeze, dust, creosote, pitch, or tar). Include NMFC 49995, Class 50 to prevent reclass.
- Use lined, heavy-duty corrugated boxes or boxed inner bags to contain fines and residue. Seal seams fully with tape to avoid dust leaks in transit.
- Palletize tightly: place slip sheets to prevent staining, add corner boards, and apply multiple wraps of stretch film. Example: two 50-lb boxes per layer for stable stacking.
- Keep away from food or white goods due to odor and residue transfer. Request no top load when using lighter boxes or when product could crush under weight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 simplifies quoting and typically yields lower LTL rates versus higher classes for dense industrial materials.
- One designation covers coke forms (breeze, dust, creosote, pitch, tar), reducing reclassification disputes and administrative friction.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and expands carrier options, shortening tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Proper boxing and containment prevent cleanup charges, protect adjacent freight, and cut claim risk tied to dust or staining.
