How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product is non-corrosive on the SDS so it qualifies for this item; corrosive blends require a different NMFC and handling.
- Pack inner containers (e.g., 4×1-gallon jugs) upright inside sturdy boxes with a sealed liner and absorbent pads; mark This Side Up and secure the box to a pallet.
- Quote and tender at Class 55 using the shipment’s actual weight (product plus packaging); no density calculation is needed for this weight-based item.
- For bulk drums, choose tight-head drums with leakproof bungs, use drum cradles or rings, and strap drums to pallets; add spill containment if the consignee requires it.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 delivers competitive LTL rates for liquid cleaners compared to many other chemical mixtures.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork, carrier hazmat surcharges, and special routing fees.
- Weight-based rating streamlines quoting and reduces reclass disputes tied to density assumptions.
- Proper boxed or drum packaging minimizes leakage claims, limiting accessorials and protecting margins.
